The 5th ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 was played between India and Australia and was scheduled on 8 Oct, in Chennai stadium. This was one of the most unexpected matches, won by India by 6 wickets.

The Man of the Match was awarded to KL Rahul who played an excellent innings of 97 runs in 115 balls and was still not out.

Weather conditions:

There was no disturbance in the match due to the weather. There were no chances of rain during the match. Both teams played their complete innings within time. 

Toss:  Australia won the toss and they decided to go to bat first.

First Batting by Australia: 

  1. David Warner played a good innings of 41 runs in 52 balls. He hit 6 fours only with a strike rate of 78.84.
  2. This match was not lucky for Mitchell Marsh and he played only 6 balls with 0 runs.
  3. The great innings played by Steven Smith and he scored 46 runs in 71 balls with 5 fours only.
  4. Marnus Labuschagne scored 27 runs in 41 balls with only one boundary(1 four).
  5. Marnus Maxwell couldn't perform so well and scored only 15 runs in 25 balls with only 1 four.

  4. Shreyas Iyer was out at 0 runs in 3 balls, caught by Warner off Hazlewood’s bowling.

Turning Point of Match:

It seemed that there was an easy match for India as a 200-run target was not so much for them. But at the start of the 2nd innings, India lost 3 wickets in just 2 runs and was under great pressure. 
Then the partnership between KL Rahul and Virat Kohli began which proved a turning point in this match for India. This was an excellent partnership of 165 runs.

  • Rohit Sharma was out at 1.3 overs (Total: 2-2)
  • Shreyas Iyer was out at 1.6 overs (Total: 3-2)

  • India scored 27 runs with a loss of 3 wickets in 1st Powerplay(1st 10 overs). This was a surprising start for India but a good start for Australia.
  • In 2nd Powerplay(11-40 overs), India's Performance was excellent and they scored 155 runs with a great loss of only 1 wicket.
  • In the 3rd Powerplay(41-50 overs), India chased the target of 200 and won by 6 wickets.


This was a fantastic match and after winning their 1st match, India got 2 points and 4th position in the standings on the points table.
